I was talking the other day with a truly great community builder, Eddie Floyd, a local broadcaster and I wondered about how we make a difference. The answer is right in front of us in the small details of daily life and not just some "heroic" and grand action. In fact, to be compassionate and loving in a particular moment when we are in a bad mood takes great courage---now that is truly heroic.
Maybe this is what Mother Teresa meant when she said, “We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”
Here are a few things any person can do (and you are probably doing many of them already) to build community. You don't have to be an expert. It is easy to start where you are and where you live! Incorporate some of these ideas over a period of time. Little by little will make all the difference.
1. A smile and a wave will go a long way.
2. Each morning, ask where you can make a difference.
8. Slow down and enjoy the present moment.
12. Walk your dog with neighbors
30. Speak kindly and listen carefully.
33. Grow your own food.
