Raising Chickens in Truckee/Tahoe-Slow Food Tahoe

Slow Food Lake Tahoe would like to start a chicken raising network.

This will be a forum to learn from each other’s experiences and to connect with people who are raising chickens in the Truckee/Tahoe region. Join us early and bring photos of your coop and flock for us to show workshop participants. This is another great reason to get involved with Slow Food Lake Tahoe.

Workshop 10am-12pm: $10 person- $15 per family

More people every year are getting involved in raising chickens. They are a great source of fresh eggs and meat and they produce excellent fertilizer and material for your compost and soil health. Raising chickens is a very fun and satisfying way to get closer to your food source.

We will cover basic coop design, feeding and handling, and cold hardy breeds. We will talk about Town codes, and what it takes to keep your birds safe from predators.

You will see first hand our flock at Truckee River Sanctuary, where we plan on having a new batch of chicks and will show you what it takes to raise your flock. There will be plenty of time for questions and handling the hens.
